Hello! And welcome to the fifth episode of Hammer House of
Podcast, where Paul Cornell (Doctor Who, Elementary) and L.M. Myles
(Verity!) discuss, in order of UK release, every horror movie made
by Hammer Film Productions between 1955 and 1976, from The
Quatermass Xperiment to To the Devil… A Daughter.
In this month's episode we encounter a mummy. Not the actual
original mummy, but a rewrite of Universal's original mummy in The
Mummy (1959). Hammer have been freed from the shackles of legal
worry, having reached an agreement wiht Universal that means they
can now nick their plots and monster designs. Is this a good idea?
No. Not really. The Mummy might have Peter Cushing as our dashing
hero, and Christopher Lee as the monster, but it's no Dracula, or
Curse of Frankenstein. On the bright side, Christopher Lee is wears
gold nail polish, and if you have a short memory for plot, you're
in luck! This film will remind you again and again of what just
happened.
